In 1962 I had broken my arm playing football and while sitting around listening to a Husky football game I was looking for something to do. I picked up a magazine that had a picture of Katherine Hepburn on it and began to draw. When I finished the drawing I noticed how good it made me feel. Then, as I was being praised for that work, I realized how much I also enjoyed that. I began to see what the future had in store for me.

Now, a number of years later, I'm an artist. I wish I could tell you how wonderful that feels. I spend time creating images that seem to be pleasing a lot of people and in most cases raising a lot of money for charity. I'm now able to say things that don't always come easy, with my art. I once told a reporter that "I felt that I'd been given a gift and I hope I'm doing what I'm supposed to with it. You be the judge. Life is wonderful!

Darren Rice Website  E-mail

Darren Rice is quickly establishing himself as one of the premier realist painters in America today.  Receiving his art training at Yale University, Mr. Rice has since earned a reputation for both his bold, confident brushwork and his keen ability to capture the nuances of light on canvas.  Rice's masterful treatment of light is due in large part to the countless hours he has spent painting from life outdoors.  Mr. Rice currently divides his time between landscape, still life and marine-oriented subject matter.  Rice's recent appointment as Official Artist To The United States One World Challenge for The America's Cup is a compliment to his talents that opens up great prospects for his continuing successful future.  Additionally, Rice was recently selected as one of the "Top 100" in the prestigious Arts For the Parks contest, an international competition.

Tom Ries   E-mail

Born in Cincinnati Tom Ries began a life-long journey as an artist at an early age. His formal entry into the arts came during high school when Ries studied with number of prominent local artists, including Paul Chidlaw at the Cincinnati Art Academy. The early years transitioned into a commercial art career, television and enlistment in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

For many years Ries lived and worked in New York as an Art Director, Designer and freelancer. He owned a small art studio and eventually became a principal in an ad agency representing many companies including American Airlines, St. Regis Paper and US News.

Drawn west to remain close to family Ries retired from the hectic pace of New York to settle in the Northwest. Ries was welcomed as a member of the Puget Sound Group in 2003 and looks forward to a rich and continuing journey pursuing artistic excellence.

I love a good drawing. I’ve been drawing as long as I can remember and won my first drawing prize when I was in the 6th grade. Even though my professional career was in the Engineering and Computing fields I maintained an interest in art by attending monthly drawing sessions from live models throughout my working years. After my retirement in the late 1990s I took on art as a full time endeavor. I paint in Watercolor, Pastel, Acrylics and Oil but even in my paintings the underlying drawing is always evident. In the last half of the previous century drawing pretty much fell out of vogue. Many art schools even shunned drawing.  Fortunately, I was off of the main track and kept up with drawing throughout my career. Today drawing from life is enjoying a new resurgence and I’m happily involved with several drawing groups.

I love a good line. The capture of a look, a gesture or an emotion with the simplicity of a clean line is almost magical to me. I’ve always admired the great artists from antiquity to modern times who, with a few pencil strokes, can evoke feelings of passion, excitement, humor, grace and elegance in the mind of the viewer. A simple line from a master artist can be as powerful as a great sentence from a gifted writer.

I love dimension. Line can be thought of as the first dimension; it has length but no width or height. In a painting, the second dimension is represented by anything that emphasizes the flat surface, including flat tone, writing on the surface, texture, splatter, abstract patterns or other such effects. Against this background of 1 and 2 dimensions might emerge a fully 3 dimensional subject with tone, shadow and other techniques that make the image seem to pop out from the flat surface.

I love tonal value. Some artists are passionate about color and are able to evoke emotion just from skillful blending of colors on the surface. But I am much more excited by rich patterns of dark and light in a drawing and a full range of shades in between.

I love people. I enjoy doing portrait commissions, figure drawing, people working, people in interesting situations, people displaying emotions (joy – sadness – anger – whatever). At least nine out of ten of my paintings involve people doing things.

I love associating with artists. I’m very active in the local art community, particularly with the Eastside Association of Fine Arts, and have served as the president of that organization. I am also active with the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters, the American Portrait Society, the Cottage Lake Art Guild, the Northwest Watercolor Society and the American Society of Marine Artists.
