Frank came to Seattle from Northern Idaho to study Advertising and Design at Cornish School of Allied Arts and Portrait Sculpture and Graphic Design at the University of Washington. He later studied painting with William Reese and portraiture with Leslie B. DeMille at the Scottsdale Artist’s School.
Ray earned his BA and MA in Art Education form the University of Washington. He is a graduate of Burnley School of Professional Art. He worked as a commercial artist and art director for Seattle ad agencies and design studios for 15 years and as a teacher and administrator in advertising art departments at Seattle Central Community College for 25 years. Co- author of nationally distributed book “Exploring with Paint.” he is the recipient of prestigious “Burlington-Northern ” award in 1988 for “outstanding contribution to education.” Ray served as PSGNWP President in 1960. Now retired, he paints in oil, watercolor and acrylic and travels to various places around the world.
Former President and Board Member of the PSGNWP he has received awards from New York Art Director ’s Club; Society of Technical Communicators; Seattle Design Association, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and others. His paintings and prints are in collections in U.S., Canada, Australia and the Philippines.
Born at Ft. Lewis, Washington, he has always called the Puget Sound area home. He grew up in a military family and served in the military as well. His skills as an artist are self-acquired. He has lived in Norway, Panama, Korea, and throughout the United States. During his military assignment in the Panama Canal, maritime art became a major interest. Since leaving the military in 1979, he returned to Washington and since that time has drawn and painted extensively, using the maritime and outdoor material of the region as material for his art. His work hangs in many private collections throughout the country and abroad. He has been among the top 100 and 200 finalists in the National park Service ’s Arts for the Parks competitions. He ’s a signature member of the Eastern Watercolor Society, a member of the American Society of Marine Artists and Coast Guard Artist Program. His work has often been honored in the annual Foss Maritime calendar completion.
Born in Medford, Oregon he obtained a degree in fine art from San Jose State College a Masters Degree in Fine Art from Stanford University. After spending two years in the Army Corps of Engineers, he entered the field of Architecture, Engineering and Real Estate development. He is responsible for the design and construction of many homes, shopping centers, office and industrial buildings throughout California. After his retirement, he returned to watercolor, taking workshops from painters such as Vernon Nye, Tony Couch, Irving Shapiro, and others. When asked about his watercolors Owen has replied, “Landscapes, seascapes, lighthouses and golf courses are my favorite subjects. I paint them is such a way as to capture the mood of the day, taking full advantage of the transparency of the watercolor medium.”
A prominent West Coast painter and printmaker, he has had a dual career as a tugboat captain and artist. He has traveled and painted in many exotic ports from Yokohama to Copenhagen, Mexico to Alaska, and New England to the Mediterranean. He served as a U.S. Army Combat Artist in Asia,1967-69 and then attended the Cornish College of the Arts from 1970 to 1973. Exhibiting since age fourteen, he had his first one-man show at the State Capitol Museum in 1974. In 1995, he completed a two-month artist residency in Kavala, Greece and his work is in private collections in Europe and Asia as well as North America. In 1992, he was selected to create the fifteen paintings that comprise the noted “St. Eval” collection of American industrialist Dennis Washington. A national gold medallist in experimental art, he works out of his Lake Union studio and serves as the Alumni exhibits committee chair for the Cornish College of the Arts. In 1996, he was selected as cadre to the internationally renowned STUDIO BLU of Seattle and Lisbon.
Don was born in Seattle in 1952 but grew up in Taiwan where he acknowledges having gained from Chinese artists his deep appreciation for the beauty and power of a finely executed brush stroke. As a child, Don studied drawing and oil painting and went on to take community college art classes in Los Angeles. He moved back to Seattle in the 70’s but it wasn’t until 1994 that he began painting seriously the plein air landscapes of Whidbey Island and the North Cascades. Through frequent visits to museums and galleries, Don studied under the likes of Monet, Klimt, N.C. Wyeth and John Singer Sargent and subsequently gained permission through their works to paint freely in his own style. In 1999, Don turned to figurative painting which continues to be his focus. Don’s studio is located on the historic Ballard Avenue in Ballard, Washington.
Hank Hays was born in Kentucky and raised in Michigan and Indiana. He sketched wildlife as a boy enthusiastically and was became fascinated by the art of Ernest Thompson Sedona well known wildlife artist of the 1930 ’s. He attended Purdue University, graduated with a degree in forestry, and spent 30 years with the U.S. Forest Service in the Northwest and Alaska. In 1983 he retired moved to Bainbridge Island in Washington State and began painting. Today his art occupies his prime time and he says; “Painting is like golf or anything else requiring great skill. You must work at it constantly and learn by your mistakes. I only wish I had more time or had started earlier.” He now concentrates on Pacific Northwest scenes and continues to experiment with interpretations and techniques.
Robert attended the Art Institute of Chicago, Art Center School of Los Angeles, Jepson School of Professional Art and Derbyshire School of Art in Seattle. He works in a wide variety of media, and his paintings have been exhibited at a number of local galleries.
Steve Hill was born in Boise, Idaho, in 1946. He has resided on Lopez Island in Washington State’s San Juan Islands since 1974, where he paints plein air coastal and traditional landscapes. He frequently travels to Spain, Italy and Greece to paint. He works primarily in soft pastels and watercolor. Steve regularly exhibits at Scott Milo Gallery in Anacortes, Washington, Yoshida’s Gallery in Portland, Oregon, Pacific Marine Gallery in Bellingham, Washington, as well as galleries in the San Juan Islands and Montana. His work has won numerous awards in national and international juried competitions and he is the current president of The Northwest Pastel Society.
John Holmes was born in Denver, Colorado in1924, He has had award winning entries in many local galleries, the Foss Tug Collection, Trout Unlimited, World Conservation to save the Cheetah, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and the Pope &Young Organization.
Born 1915,son of Ernest Horswill, well-known painter and illustrator of those days. Has exhibited in most Northwest museums and exhibited in national travel shows.
