Join us in welcoming new Associate Member Jan Jewell to the Puget Sound Group!
Jan Jewell has expressed her creativity with different art forms throughout her life. The first public exhibition of her work was a six-week show at the Dallas (Texas) Museum of Fine Arts as winner of a high-school art competition. During the late 1970's she studied with Knud Holst Andersen, one of Denmark's top silversmiths; and then apprenticed with Ellen Margarete Broker, a goldsmith in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1979 Jan earned a degree in fine art with a specialization in metalsmithing from the University of Houston, Texas.
After a successful fifteen-year career in fine jewelry with a loyal clientele in Boston, Houston, and the California Bay Area, in 1992 Jan co-founded what would become the nation’s fifth largest party supply manufacturer, and the largest direct marketer of children’s party supplies, Birthday Express. After retiring from Birthday Express, Jan designed and built a lodge-style timberframe home on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State using native hardwoods and local granite. Set in a magnificent temperate rainforest filled with enormous trees, lakes, and waterfalls; with the Olympic Mountains providing a snow-capped backdrop, this home is a continual source of inspiration and wonder.
Since completing her timberframe home, she has focused on representational oil painting. With a strong desire to be exposed to the distinctive techniques of artists she admires, Jan began taking workshops and has had the fortunate opportunity to study with Scott Christensen, Jeremy Lipking, Ovanes Berberian, Ned Mueller, Kathleen Dunphy, Alexander Zimin and David Gray, among others. She has also expanded her knowledge base by studying numerous artists’ DVD’s and growing her artists’ library. A year after joining Plein Air Washington (PAWA), Jan joined its board as webmaster. She found plein air painting to be exhilarating, and has traveled on painting adventures either with groups, or solo to France, Italy, Finland, Sweden, Glacier National Park, the Grand Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, Arches National Monument, the Grand Tetons, California, Hawaii and all over her home of Washington State. She was granted a one-month artist’s residency in Dinan, France for the month of September, 2013. She is a mother of four, living with her husband Mike in Bellevue.
