Steven R Hill, from Lopez Island, WA, has been selected to participate for his second consecutive year in the sixth annual Zion National Park Plein Air Art Invitational, November 3-9, at Zion National Park in southern Utah.
Twenty four artists from around the U.S. are invited to this event, which includes a week long plein air painting competition, free painting demonstrations for the public by all invited artists and a public wet paint exhibit and sale the last day.
Last year, Hill won one of the top purchase awards ($1600) for his pastel “Virgin River Guardian”. Zion is a spectacular painting venue with nearly unbelievable shades of reds, russets, hot pinks, brilliant golds and oranges, subtle yellow ochre and even milky white rock formations that form the canyon strata. Shifting light and shadows on the canyon walls make everything a unique and fun challenge to paint!
Early November brings out the autumn colors on the trees that cling to the canyon walls and carpet the river bottom areas below. Warm sunny days and very cool nights, with the possibility of early snow add to the unpredictable weather drama of painting around Zion.
