Statement
of work.
The philosophy and general aim of my work is to search,
through sculpture, the reasons for our existence and to indicate what some
possible answers might be. Humanistic art, in its various aesthetic aspects,
represents the many levels upon which these questions may be approached. It also
enables the viewer to bring his/her life experiences in the participation with
the artist of seeing the art.
I have considered the figure, and other sentient beings, in their physical
appearance and attributes. My treatment has also dealt with the figure as a
symbol and at another level as a metaphor.
By different techniques, at various times, I have worked with these concepts in
different ways. The technical process shown in my work expands on the "lost
wax" process for bronze casting. In this process a sculpture may be formed
with any material which then is molded and then has a wax form made from the
mold. By using any carbon based material to create the sculpture prior to
casting, I am able to make a sculpture directly in the following materials and
then burn out the carbon material and pour the bronze. Materials such as wood,
cardboard, cloth, string, rope, some plastics and wax are all used for the
"lost carbon" technique.
This process to some degree has the technique altering the aesthetic. Another
aspect of this method is that its directness fits closely with my temperament
and thought processes.
