William Ryan

The American Before the Wind

Artist Bio

William E. Ryan says of his work: “I mostly paint subjects I love! I strive to portray an idea or experience, for the pleasure of others and myself!” Born in Oakland, California, Ryan now resides in Naples, Florida and paints full-time, subjects ranging from marine, land, and cityscapes.

Ryan studied art at the California College of Arts and Crafts, in Oakland, and graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA) and is listed in “Who’s Who in American Art,” 18th edition, and also in the Dictionary of Sea Painters by E.H.H. Archibald (Second Edition).   The artist has received awards for his paintings, among them the Rudolph Schaefer Award, 1987, Awards of Excellence, 1988, 1990, and 1999 at the Maritime Gallery’s International Marine Art exhibitions. He was commissioned to do paintings for the U. S. Navy art collection and his works are hanging in office of the Secretary of the Navy at the Pentagon. Ryan’s success has been achieved by the quality of his paintings and the continual refinement of his artistic skills. As infrequent as they are, his paintings are valued by collectors nationally and internationally.
